First annual members conference unites Dutch-Somalis in Mogadishu

On October 20, 2022, the Guriga Oranje management board held its first annual member’s conference to unite all current and potential Guriga Oranje members in one sizable network event in Mogadishu.

This year’s annual conference aimed to create a tangible fundraising strategy that includes various sources of revenue, such as funding, member dues, significant donors, and individual donors.

The chairman gave various presentations on the organisation’s history, structure, objectives, activities, and plans. The agenda item that generated the most discussion was membership and related issues. The management presented a variety of membership options.

In his captivating presentation, Mohamed Mohamud ‘Baasaweyne’ discussed how the Somali-Dutch diaspora could contribute to and influence Somalia’s society by acting as a voice for The Netherlands.

Additionally, in a workshop, the participants engaged in discussions guided by the subcommittees according to membership registration and preferences. Among the subcommittees chosen are; Advocacy and Development, Social and Humanitarian, and Business and commercial sub-groups.

The sub-groups recommendations include: GO to advocate and lobby for high-level ties between the two countries, such as parliamentary and ministerial connections, and fostering relationships between organisations and businesses in both countries.

As a result of the discussion, it suggested that the Somali-Dutch participants’ contributions to the socioeconomic and cultural development of the host community be strengthened and improved. Examples of this involvement include;

— helping to enhance the educational and economic systems,
— promoting hygiene, and
— transferring skills to mainly underprivileged and marginalised women and youth.

The conference concluded with the registration of new members.
