Based on a comprehensive study published in September, The Guriga Oranje partnered with the Somali Agriculture Research and Technology Center (SARTEC) to develop a tailored training program, specifically addressing numerous critical challenges within essential sectors like agriculture, energy, and water to help industries overcome the obstacles and emerge stronger.
The focus areas encompassed the strategic utilization of technology, adept financial management, and effective marketing strategies. This pioneering endeavour aimed to equip MSMEs with the knowledge and skills necessary to thrive, fostering innovation and sustainable growth within the vibrant entrepreneurial community of Mogadishu, Somalia.

A dynamic cohort of 45 participants, including skilled professionals and delegates from diverse small to medium-sized enterprises across the three targeted sectors, actively engaged in the training sessions held between October 25th and 31st, 2023. On the pivotal fourth and final day, we united all participants for a comprehensive session delving into cross-cutting topics like financial management and marketing.
The primary objectives of the training were threefold:

Key Highlights
Trainers and participants noted the various advantages of the training sessions. These benefits enhanced knowledge and skills, leading to further professional growth and success.
- Increased production and productivity: Advanced technologies like precision agriculture, mechanization, and advanced irrigation systems can significantly enhance agricultural productivity by optimizing input usage, reducing labour dependency, and minimizing water wastage.
- Improved water and energy resource management: Technology allows better management of limited resources like water, land, and energy. Remote sensing and data analytics provide insights into soil, moisture, and crop health, helping farmers make informed decisions. Efficient resource use leads to cost savings and environmental sustainability.
- Enhanced market access: Tech can improve market access for businesses by connecting them directly with buyers through mobile apps and online platforms, eliminating intermediaries and ensuring fair prices. Digital platforms also provide market information, enabling businesses to make informed decisions and connect with customers.
- Disease and pest management: Technology helps manage diseases and pests in agriculture. Remote sensing and drones detect them early. Biotech has led to genetically modified crops with better resistance.
- Access to financial services: FinTech could improve financial access for Somali farmers via mobile banking and digital payments. This enables secure payments and access to loans, insurance, and savings accounts. It helps farmers manage risks, invest in their farms, and improve their livelihoods.
- Knowledge sharing and capacity building: Technology is vital for farmers to share knowledge. Online platforms offer crucial information, training resources, and expert advice. This helps farmers learn new techniques, best practices, and market trends to improve their work.
