The Guriga Oranje ‘Dutch-Somali organisation’ chairman spoke at the IOM Global Diaspora Summit 2022

The chairman of the Guriga Oranje, Mohamed Bashir Osman, was honoured to speak at the Global Diaspora Summit 2022 in Dublin in an online session on the role of the diaspora in engaging in peacebuilding and humanitarianism, citing Covid—19 as a watershed moment.

The online session was held on the 1st of April 2022, Day one of the Global Diaspora Summit 2022, organised by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in collaboration with the Government of Ireland. The discussion reflected on significant systemic issues and possibilities confronting diaspora humanitarianism and its players to build a forward-looking, solution-oriented vision for the future of diaspora humanitarianism.

The Guriga Oranje chair presented the work, objectives, and primary strategic priority on diaspora-related issues to the summit. He emphasised the role and impact of the Somali diaspora on Somalia’s political and humanitarian landscapes without any legislation recognising the diaspora as a critical stakeholder in the country’s development.

“The diaspora has always been a backbone for Somalia; they have generated value and generously supported their communities,” he said. In addition, He urged the necessity of a policy aiding the diaspora and their engagement in policy-making.

Often, diaspora humanitarianism is the first chance for diaspora communities to consider their collective action in a cooperative way. This means it is a point at which diasporas understand the capacities they can bring to formalised systems in the various stages of humanitarian assistance and across the humanitarian-development nexus. It serves as a case study for why and how diaspora communities can and should collaborate.

The panel also discussed the impact of a growing technological and communication infrastructure in supporting diaspora humanitarianism.
